Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve

Hike Review

  • Cassie and I parked at the park entrance, and we hiked a loop around the park by taking the Old Stage Road, Edgewood Trail, Sunset Trail, Serpentine Trail, Franciscan Trail, Baywood Glen Trail, and the Sylvan Trail.

  • Sunset Trail, Serpentine Trail, and the Franciscan Trail did not have much (if any) shade, while the rest of the trails had a ton of shade. On this day, we were not seeking shelter from the sun, however. The abundance of trees on the Baywood Glen Trail, in particular, protected us from a downpour.

  • Old Stage Road and Edgewood Trail could not have had more poison oak lining both sides of the trail. Thankfully, the trails were wide, and we could easily avoid the poison oak.

  • The parking was easy with lots of room to park. There was even a bathroom near the entrance/picnic area.

What Happened?

3.8 miles, 1 hr 25 mins, 711 ft of ascent

We had initially wanted to hike San Bruno Mountain, but we discovered that Cassie had forgotten her waterproof jacket, and so we headed south, where our weather app promised us dry conditions. Unfortunately, the app was wrong, and we did get rained on, but thankfully it only poured on us near the end, when we were more than 80% done with the hike.

At Edgewood, what we found was a green paradise that unfortunately has a ton of road noise on the Old Stage Road, Edgewood Trail, and Sunset Trail. The first two trails also are super steep, though it doesn’t last too long. Thankfully, by the time we got to the Serpentine Trail, everything quieted down, and we got to enjoy the quiet of being out in nature, though that was soon disturbed by the sound of falling rain.

We quickened our pace, and when we got to Baywood Glen Trail, we were glad that we were almost done as it was pouring down on us. When we got back to the car, we turned up the heater and turned on the seat warmer to full as we drove back home, which beckoned us home with the promise of a hot shower.
