Mojave National Preserve—Granite Pass

Camp Review

  • On GaiaGPS, there are 7 other sites near Granite Pass (on the west side of Kelbaker Road), and if this site is any indication, I am sure that the others are great too.

  • We had internet on Verizon, minimal bugs, and it was silent with little wind (protected by two hills). The site was a little sloped, but not too bad. Pretty much a perfect dispersed campsite.

  • The only negative was that we were in eyesight of Kelbaker Road, so we did not feel fully remote. But really, this was a minor nit as there were so few cars on Kelbaker Road.

  • This site had a fire ring built with stone. There was minimal trash that I could see.

What Happened?

Cassie and I found a great campsite near Granite Pass at Mojave National Preserve. We arrived after dark, so we weren’t sure how good the site was, but when we arrived, it was empty, level-enough, and we had this site to ourselves.

We popped up our camper and hung out for a while before going to bed, as the winter sunset arrives much earlier than our natural inclination to sleep. We both read for a bit, played some puzzle games, and finally went to bed.

In the morning, we boiled some water for hot chocolate and headed off to Kelso Dunes for a morning hike.
